Turning point
In 2017, I was introduced by an acquaintance to a local photographer. At this point I was making what I called scribbles in my notebooks. The point of the meeting was to meet someone in the wedding industry. At the meeting we had coffee and chatted. About halfway through, she said “Can I see your Instagram to see what your lettering looks like?”. I sat there nervously and said “Sure”. I pulled it up and showed her. She said it’s cute. But you need to create invitation suites, maybe a Christmas card, and pointed pen calligraphy. This looks cute but not many people will take you seriously. I left the meeting in reflection and thought about it. On every post I would put, #beginner” or new letterer. I realized I was not taking myself seriously. At the same time I thought how in the world do you just “do” an invitation suite. A few weeks after that I started the journey from scratch of teaching myself pointed pen calligraphy. It only took me one year to fully get it.. haha. And, eventually, I did learn I could design invitation suites with the skills I learned. You may not see what the outcome will be in the instant but each step builds on the other. It’s fun to look back on the people in your path that push you into being the best version of yourself. Everything is figure out able.
