Vulnerability in Business

A question I get a bunch in my workshops, classes, and just talking to people is- how do I know if I’m good enough to put my work out there? The truth is to own where you are right now at this very moment. The picture in this blog is how I began. I didn’t even know there was such a thing as calligraphy. I found myself playing around as I was pregnant with my second child and my writing eventually turned into calligraphy. I put my work on Instagram in 2016- and it was rough—very rough. I was not ready by any stretch of the imagination but was doing something I liked to do. The truth is, now, five years later I still look at some of my work and see need for improvement and there are definite areas of improvement. Each step of the way, I was never ready whether it was my first workshop, first time lettering on an envelope, working for a big client, etc. You never feel ready, you just start from where you are now and begin. Vulnerability in your business and your work is the hardest thing to be vulnerable with. You put your hard work, time, and energy out there and you hope it will be received well. But the truth is, sometimes it will be received well and sometimes it won’t. I’m so glad I took that first leap in 2016 with my very imperfect art and have learned many lessons along the way.
